Asian shares rise on growth hopes after firm U.S. data

TOKYO (Reuters) - Asian shares on Tuesday sustained momentum from an overnight rally in global equities, with solid manufacturing data from the United States offsetting signs of mild recession in Europe.
Participants in European equity markets are expected to be cautious, however, with financial spreadbetters predicting major European markets will open flat to 0.2 percent higher. U.S. stock futures were steady.
MSCI's broadest index of Asia Pacific shares outside Japan gained 0.7 percent, while a firmer yen hurt Japan's Nikkei average, which fell 0.3 percent to move further away from a one-year high marked last week.
Australian shares pared some of the session's gains after the central bank left interest rates on hold, dashing lingering hopes for a jolt of stimulus to the economy and sending the Australian dollar below $1.0400 from around $1.0434.
"The current market environment is favourable in that it is inching higher while digesting caution and concerns about growth prospects, which suggests sentiment is actually quite solid," said Tetsu Emori, a Tokyo-based commodities fund manager at Astmax Investments.
"One good indicator for growth is the oil price, which has remained supported in part by supply disruption concerns, but its firmness is also driven by demand accompanying economic recovery."
Stronger-than-expected U.S. factory data on Monday pushed U.S. stocks to four-year highs, while European shares recorded their biggest daily gain in three weeks despite sluggish factory activity in the euro zone.
The U.S. Institute for Supply Management report followed a surprise jump in China's large factory activity and stronger manufacturing in other leading exporters, South Korea and Taiwan, but output was still far from robust.
"There is a growing sense among many investors that markets could be about to enter a seasonal flat spot," said Cameron Peacock, a market analyst at IG Markets. "The 'sell in May and go away' mentality normally starts to creep into investors' mindsets from mid-April and could be even more of a factor this year, given the profits already on offer to take off the table."
Barclays Capital analysts said they remained comfortable with their view that U.S. cyclical outperformance will continue to support the dollar against low yielding developed market currencies.
US YIELDS EYED
But on Tuesday, the dollar struggled to gain against the yen, as the yen's firmness was also underpinned by a drop in cross-yen pairs led by the Australian dollar after the central bank rate decision.
A fall in U.S. Treasury yields pushed the greenback lower against the yen on Monday, and the dollar extended losses to hit a three-week low of 81.55 yen on Tuesday. The euro edged up 0.1 percent to $1.3332, off Monday's low of $1.3278.
Investors will likely remain cautious about taking aggressive risks, ahead of key data including U.S. nonfarm payrolls on Friday and China's first quarter gross domestic product due next week.
Later in the session, the U.S. Federal Reserve's Federal Open Market Committee will issue minutes from its meeting of March 13.
"Tuesday's release of the FOMC minutes may include a discussion of QE (quantitative easing) and shed more light on the possibility of a QE3 to come," said Societe Generale analysts. "Market expectations range from viewing the Fed as in a wait-and-see mode to the anticipation of a concrete QE3 announcement in the April FOMC meeting."
Views over the Fed's policy direction are key to determining money flows, as receding expectations for further monetary stimulus have boosted U.S. Treasury yields and lifted the dollar last month against such low-yielding currencies as the yen.
Oil paused from Monday's strong gains, with Brent crude futures easing 0.4 percent to $124.99 a barrel after settling up $2.55, while U.S. crude was down 0.4 percent to $104.85 a barrel, after settling up $2.21.
Shanghai markets are closed through Wednesday, while European, U.S. and some Asian markets will be closed on Friday for the long Easter weekend.
Asian credit markets firmed, with the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index narrowing by 2 basis points.

Olympiacos celebrate almost-title

Fans of Greek football awoke on Monday morning to find their country's national championship, the Super League, in a curious state of suspended animation. Those of an Olympiacos persuasion may well have rolled out of bed nursing sore heads after a night spent toasting their club's 39th league title success but — officially at least — nothing has been decided yet.
Olympiacos' 1-0 victory at Panaitolikos on Sunday left them four points clear of second-placed Panathinaikos with three matches of the season remaining. However, the gap is effectively an unassailable 10 points because Panathinaikos were docked three points and Olympiacos were awarded a 3-0 victory after serious violence forced last month's Athens derby at the Olympic Stadium to be abandoned.
Panathinaikos decided to appeal against the Super League's decision to punish them and their appeal will be heard by the Hellenic Football Federation on Wednesday, when it is widely expected that the league table will be verified and Olympiacos' title celebrations will be able to begin in earnest.
Few in attendance at the Panaitolikos Stadium in Agrinio on Sunday night will have been left in any doubt as to the outcome of the title race, however. Ernesto Valverde's players cavorted in the middle of the pitch at the final whistle, while an arresting photo of Algerian winger Djamel Abdoun enjoying the post-match festivities in the away dressing room began to circulate on Twitter.
"At such moments the atmosphere is always happy," said captain Vassilis Torosidis. "We lost our way a bit in January, which is normal. No team in the world can always be at their best. Fortunately, we picked ourselves up and kept going and for me the depth of our squad was the decisive factor for us this season."
Fittingly, the goal that looks set to give Olympiacos the title came from top scorer Kevin Mirallas, who took his tally to 19 goals for the campaign with a measured finish in the 54th minute. A flop at Saint-Etienne, where he scored only three goals in 53 Ligue 1 appearances, the 24-year-old Belgium international has been the sensation of the season in Greece, having already contributed 14 goals to Olympiacos' title success last term.
It is in many respects a Misfits XI. The pass for Mirallas's goal at Panaitolikos came from Jean Makoun, the on-loan Cameroon midfielder who has found his feet in the port city of Piraeus after his three-year spell at Lyon came to an underwhelming conclusion last year and he failed to convince at Aston Villa.
Watching on from the substitutes' bench, meanwhile, was Roy Carroll. Apparently destined to be remembered for getting away with one of the worst fumbles in goalkeeping history while playing for Manchester United against Tottenham Hotspur in January 2005, the Northern Irishman made an unexpected return to the headlines in February when he saved a penalty with his very first touch as an Olympiacos player after coming on as a substitute following the dismissal of Balazs Megyeri in a 1-0 Europa League win at Rubin Kazan.
"Players like Mirallas and [Olof] Mellberg had a point to prove and have done so by showing an effort coupled with their undoubted quality," says George Georgakopoulos, who covers Greek football for the Kathimerini daily. "The fact that they put an effort in certainly made the difference."
The title triumph has also provided further vindication for 48-year-old Valverde, who left Olympiacos in 2009 after he was unable to agree a contract extension - despite having led the club to a league and cup double - and who was then sacked after barely half a season in charge at Villarreal.
Underlining the fans' joy is the inevitable schadenfreude at the fate of their sworn enemies Panathinaikos, who must play four matches behind closed doors due to the violence in the derby and who will begin the 2012-13 campaign with a two-point deduction. With a rivalry so intense, no sooner has one season ended than the next has already begun.

Premier League - Late show puts United five points clear

After being frustrated for 81 minutes, the visitors took the lead with a wonder-goal by winger Valencia, whose swerving, rapid effort from an acute angle bamboozled Rovers' defence and goalkeeper to fly into the net.
Just over four minutes later substitute Young – sent on just five minutes earlier – turned on to Valencia’s pass to fire a vicious low drive in off the post, that goal putting Rovers in the drop zone and sparking an early exodus of home support.
Coupled with Manchester City’s 3-3 draw at home to Sunderland, United’s seventh win on the bounce puts them five points clear at the top of the league with seven matches remaining.
Blackburn, meanwhile, slip into the bottom three on goal difference behind Queens Park Rangers, although more feisty performances like this will give them a fighting chance of staying up.
An eerie, subdued atmosphere prevailed in a first half where United dominated but had keeper David De Gea to thank for some acrobatic stops at the end of the 45 minutes.
The Spaniard did very well to first palm away a Marcus Olsson volley and then tip over Grant Hanley’s header from the subsequent corner as Rovers almost snatched the lead in first-half stoppage time.
Otherwise it was all United, who had two thirds of the possession but were denied by some poor finishing from Javier Hernandez of all people, and Wayne Rooney, both of whom mis-hit volleys early on.
The visitors were also denied by a combination of the woodwork and goalkeeper Paul Robinson when, on 11 minutes, Hernandez got his finish right from Valencia’s excellent cross: the fizzing strike rebounded off the near post, back against Robinson and was trickling in before the former England keeper clawed the ball from the line.
De Gea’s late-half saves were not his first of the half as, from a rare Rovers counter, he dived across to keep out Junior Hoilett’s curling shot: Blackburn were indeed more accurate than United with their shooting in the first period, making the Spaniard work more often than Robinson.
But normal business was soon resumed as Jonny Evans fired straight at Robinson after the hosts failed to clear a corner - their second shot on target - while former Blackburn player Phil Jones headed another Valencia cross wide, and Scott Dann’s block from Michael Carrick’s cross looked suspiciously like handball, Howard Webb well placed but pointing for a corner.
The second half saw United continue to apply the pressure, and they went close when a Rooney free-kick was kept out by Robinson, who also denied Rafael a long-range effort when a corner was not fully cleared.
The disappointing Hernandez got his wires crossed when Rovers’ defence let a high ball land for him with just Robinson to beat: possibly thinking he had less time, the Mexico forward mis-timed his header when he could have controlled and shot.
That escape sparked a brief Rovers rally, which saw them unlucky not to take the lead: Ayegbeni Yakubu, hitherto anonymous save for the flick that sent Hoilett in earlier one, fired just over after Carrick gave the ball away; the Nigerian striker then fired just wide after getting outside Evans, the angle too tight for him to test De Gea.
A controversial 62nd-minute free-kick almost saw the hosts go ahead: Paul Scholes was wrongly adjudged to have fouled Yakubu on the edge of the D and Morten Gamst Pedersen’s effort deflected off the wall to leave De Gea only able to parry the ball - fortunately for him, Rio Ferdinand was quickest to react.
Rovers had the ball in the net soon after that but Pedersen’s fine strike was correctly chalked off, Steven N’Zonzi taking it out of play in the build up.
That in itself seemed warning enough to Sir Alex Ferguson, who introduced Ryan Giggs for Phil Jones, the ex-Blackburn defender starting well in midfield but fading in the second half.
Giggs gave United renewed urgency and, most importantly, balance: an odd starting formation that placed Rooney as a left-winger slipped back to a more conventional 4-4-2 as Danny Welbeck partnered his England team-mate up front.
They continued to grind away but Blackburn were resolute and organised, leaving United frustrated until Valencia’s intervention.
He had tried a similar trick earlier – cutting inside and shooting with the outside of his boot, as United’s forwards had previously been a touch sluggish to meet his crosses – but that effort was blocked.
And on 81 minutes the Ecuadorian elected to shoot from a tighter angle, this time generating curl and pace on a ball that looked like a cross but bent wickedly inside to flummox Robinson and nestle in the net.
It was one of those goals that will appear in video compilations for years to come, its quality overshadowing what would ordinarily have been one of the goals of the week when, a few minutes later, Young spun expertly on the edge of the box before firing a savage low effort in off the right-hand post.
Rovers fans had seen enough, leaving their rivals to sing various odes to the other local giants Manchester City, with United edging a step closer to what would be a remarkable Premier League crown, even by their standards.

Rail guard 'degraded' disabled man

The first quadriplegic sailor to sail solo across the Atlantic was told by a guard he could not board a train because his electric wheelchair would damage the floor.
Humiliated Geoff Holt, 45, said he could not recall the last time he was so upset and angry after the incident on the Island Line's three-minute Ryde Pier to Ryde Esplanade service on the Isle of Wight on Saturday.
To his horror, he said, "in typical British fashion", no passenger came to his aid as he argued with the guard.
The unnamed guard has now been suspended pending an investigation and a senior manager has apologised, the "horrified" train operator has confirmed. British Transport Police also said they were investigating.
Writing on his blog, the award-winning sailor, who champions disability issues and was awarded an MBE in 2010, said: "Quite simply, a guard on the train, specifically 'Guard 1003' as he reluctantly identified himself when pressed, refused to let me board the 4.45pm train - the same journey I had made nine hours earlier.
"Why? To quote Guard 1003, pointing at my wheelchair, 'Those things aren't allowed on these trains, they will damage the floors'. I couldn't quite believe what I heard and asked him to repeat it, which he did."
Mr Holt has been in a wheelchair since a swimming accident 28 years ago in the Caribbean and he completed his 2,700-mile transatlantic sail in 2010 finishing at the site of his 1984 accident.
The father-of-one added: "He had publicly humiliated me, he had publicly degraded me and he had made me feel like a worthless piece of dirt... it was quite simply the most disgusting way to treat another human being, let alone a disabled one."
An Island Line spokesman said: "We are absolutely horrified at the events Mr Holt has described. We welcome electric wheelchairs on our services and it is very important to us that all of our passengers feel welcome on our network.
"We are taking this matter very seriously and have already launched an investigation. A senior manager has contacted Mr Holt directly to apologise. We can also confirm that one of our employees has been suspended while our investigation is under way."

Unprepared Uni Students Get Extra Classes

Universities are laying on extra classes for new students amid concerns that many first-year undergraduates are unprepared for degree study, research suggests.
According to a report by Cambridge Assessment , the measures have been taken by some institutions partly because too much "teaching to the test" in schools has left students struggling to write essays, build arguments and conduct research.
The study is based on an 18-month research programme that included a survey of 633 higher education lecturers and roadshows.
More than half of lecturers think that undergraduates are not ready for degree-level study, the findings suggest.
Three fifths said that their universities are providing extra "support" classes for under-prepared first-year students, usually focusing on writing and independent learning.
And nearly three quarters of those questioned said that they have changed their teaching styles for students who are not ready for university study.
The findings, due to be presented at a conference today, say that academics want A-levels to include more advanced content for bright students, cover subjects in more depth and encourage critical thinking and independent study.

April snow brings end to warm spell

Parts of Britain have been waking up to a blanket of snow as the recent spell of unseasonably warm weather was replaced by wintry conditions and predictions of sub-zero temperatures.
More than six inches of snow fell in the space of four hours in parts of Scotland overnight as an Arctic weather front bore down on the UK.
There could be disruption on the way into work, as snow and sleet was predicted in time for rush hour in Glasgow and Edinburgh, with motorists warned to take extra care because of snow and ice on the roads.
And after one of the warmest Marches on record forecasters warned Britons to get their jumpers and scarves back out with temperatures set to plummet to as low as -5C overnight into Wednesday as the big chill moves south.
Around 10cm of snow has carpeted most parts of northern Scotland overnight, with accumulations of 17cm recorded in Aviemore in the Highlands and temperatures of close to -2C in Glen Ogle.
Scotland's central belt was also hit by the wintry weather, which will gradually creep into northern England, parts of Wales and the Midlands in the coming 24 hours.
Aisling Creevy, a forecaster with MeteoGroup, the weather division of the Press Association, said: "A slow moving Arctic front has brought a wintry mix of weather to parts of Scotland overnight with snow, sleet and rain in northern and central areas.
"Snow and rain showers will continue in Scotland throughout the day and move into northern England before reaching the Midlands tomorrow morning. A raw north-easterly wind will also make it feel very cold with the wind-chill taking a two or three of degrees off the actual temperature."
The Met Office has issued an amber severe weather warning for snow in four areas of central and northern Scotland, advising the public to be prepared for transport disruption with ice developing on untreated roads.
However, Ms Creevy said the cold snap will be short lived with temperatures recovering on Thursday. The weather is in stark contrast to March's mini-heatwave - the only years to have a warmer March in the past 100 years were 1938, 1948, 1957, 1990 and 1997.

UK condemns Falklands protesters

The Government has condemned violent protesters who attacked the British Embassy in Argentinian capital Buenos Aires on the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War.
Several hundred demonstrators pelted police officers with homemade fire-bombs and threw rocks and flaming bottles towards the embassy as a series of events were held in both Argentina and the UK on Monday to commemorate the 1982 conflict.
Television footage showed riot police using a water cannon to disperse the group of extremists who had earlier set fire to a Union Jack flag and an effigy of the Duke of Cambridge in protest against the British rule of the islands.
The violence came after Argentina's president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner stoked the diplomatic battle between Buenos Aires and London by describing the UK's control over the Falkland Islands as unjust.
However, David Cameron said he remained committed to upholding British sovereignty over the territory and insisted that the islanders must be allowed to choose their nationality status.
Argentina's complaints - including to the United Nations - of "militarisation" by the UK will be heightened by the deployment on Wednesday of the Navy's most advanced warship for its maiden operation.
Destroyer HMS Dauntless will set sail from Portsmouth for the Falklands in what the The Ministry of Defence says is a "pre-planned and routine" six-month deployment in the South Atlantic. It comes after Argentinian hackles were raised by the "provocative" six-week deployment of Prince William to the islands as an RAF search and rescue helicopter pilot.
The Foreign Office condemned "the violent actions of a minority" following Monday's demonstration. It said in a statement: "All states are obliged under the Vienna Convention to provide appropriate protection for foreign diplomatic missions.
"We expect the Argentine Government to continue to fulfil its obligations under the convention and continue fully to enforce the law against any demonstrators committing criminal acts."
A total of 255 UK serviceman were killed in retaking the remote South Atlantic islands, while 649 Argentinians lost their lives in the conflict.

Rescued Injured Sailors Are In Good Spirits

Two sailors who were injured when a large wave crashed on to their yacht during a round-the world race have arrived back on dry land.
Three British crew members and one Australian were hurt on board the vessel when it was caught in rough seas about 400 miles off the California coast in the Pacific Ocean.
The yacht, the Geraldton Western Australia, is one of 10 UK-registered 68ft yachts competing in the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race, which takes place once every two years.
The boat's doctor Jane Hitchens, 50, from Kent, and 29-year-old Nik Brbora, who lives in London, were transferred by small boat to a US coast guard cutter , the Bertholf, which arrived in San Francisco late last night.
Ms Hitchens has four suspected broken ribs and is being treated with oxygen, and Mr Brbora, a software engineer, has suspected pelvic strain.
Both were said to be "in good spirits.
Two other injured crew members - Max Wilson, 62, a farmer from Queensland, Australia, who also has suspected broken ribs but is in a more stable position, and Mark Burkes, 47, from Worcestershire, who suffered a back injury - were deemed well enough to remain on the yacht which is also due to dock later.
The four sailors were hurt when a wave hit the boat in storm conditions on Saturday , sweeping away its steering wheel and mount and some of its communications equipment.
All of the remaining 18-strong crew on the boat are said to be uninjured but shaken.
The 40,000-mile race, which features predominantly amateur crews, started in Southampton in July last year and is due to return to the city in July this year.

Call for talks on tanker 'crisis'

The chairman of the body which represents thousands of independent petrol stations has called for urgent discussions with ministers over Britain's transport fuel "crisis".
In a letter to Energy Secretary Ed Davey, Brian Madderson of the Retail Motor Industry Federation (RMI) predicted that fuel shortages caused by last week's panic buying could continue until at least the Easter weekend and possibly beyond as petrol stations struggle to restock.
He also said the confidence of independent fuel retailers had been "abruptly shaken" by the Government's "perceived inability" to manage the issue of a potential strike by tanker drivers.
Mr Madderson's comments came as new research revealed that three in four people (77%) believe the Government was responsible for causing unnecessary panic over the ongoing dispute.
Research commissioned by ITV News at Ten also found that 72% think David Cameron was wrong to advise people to top up their fuel, while just 12% of the 2,000 adults interviewed by ComRes agreed that the Government has handled the strike threat in a responsible way.
Fuel tanker drivers and their employers are due to hold substantive talks on Wednesday in an attempt to resolve the dispute which has flared over safety and working conditions.
Conciliation service Acas, which will chair the meeting, said it had held briefings with the Unite union and the seven distribution firms involved in the row over the past few days.
In his letter to the Government, Mr Madderson wrote: "Independent petrol retailers across the UK have had their confidence abruptly shaken by the Government's perceived inability to manage the issue of a potential industrial dispute by Unite affiliated tanker drivers.
"It is now very clear to the public and to the media that Government created a crisis out of a concern, with some ill-conceived recommendations and complete lack of engagement with industry to prepare for possible strike action."
He also stated that the UK's energy resilience for fuel required "a complete overhaul" with regard to retail forecourts.

Farc Rebels Free Colombian 'Prisoners Of War'

Colombia's Farc rebels have freed what it says were its last 10 soldier and police hostages as the weakened group seeks peace talks with the government.
The captives had been held in jungle prisons for at least 12 years.
They were flown to the eastern city of Villavicencio on a military helicopter and were seen waving delightedly as they landed.
Some wore the Colombian flag over their shoulders as they met waiting relatives.
"I shouted! I jumped up and down!" said Olivia Solarte, describing the moment she heard her 41-year-old police officer son had been freed.
Farc - or The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia - announced in February it would release the hostages, its last remaining "prisoners of war", as it pledged to stop ransom kidnappings.
President Juan Manuel Santos had no immediate comment on the latest releases, but has previously said he wants proof Farc, which took up arms in 1964, is sincere about ceasing hostilities before he agrees to peace dialogue.
Recent weeks have seen renewed violence. Farc killed at least 11 soldiers in a mid-March attack near the Venezuelan border and the military responded with two precision bombings on rebel camps that killed more than 60 insurgents.
There are estimates that at least 400 civilians who have been kidnapped since 1996 have never been freed by Farc .
In the 1990s the group, which is estimated to have 9,000 fighters, or by criminal gangs that sold the abducted to the rebels, helped make Colombia the world's kidnapping capital.
Among their most high-profile victims was Ingrid Betancourt, a Colombian politician, anti-corruption activist and Nobel Peace Prize nominee who was kidnapped in 2002 and rescued more than six years later by Colombian security forces.

Rioters Attack British Embassy In Buenos Aires

Demonstrators have attacked the British embassy compound in Buenos Aires on the 30th anniversary of the 1982 Falklands War.
Members of the extremist Quebracho movement charged the compound in the Argentine capital after smashing through a protective barrier.
Riot officers forced them back before some demonstrators launched missiles and flares at police, who returned fire with rubber bullets, water cannon and tear gas.
In the minutes prior to the attack, extremists had set fire to a Union Jack flag and an effigy of Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge.
Speaking to Sky News Online, Quebracho leader Fernando Esteche, said: "The burning of the flag and effigy symbolised our disgust at this British invasion of our national territory.
"This includes Britain's monarchy, which is directly responsible."
In a statement the Foreign Office said: "We condemn the violent actions of a minority during today's demonstration.
"All states are obliged under the Vienna Convention to provide appropriate protection for foreign diplomatic missions.
"We expect the Argentine Government to continue to fulfil its obligations under the convention and continue fully to enforce the law against any demonstrators committing criminal acts.
"We recognise the dedication and professionalism of the police in their efforts to keep order."
Many Argentines believe British presence in the South Atlantic is an illegal act of colonialism.
"We smashed the barrier down to show you [the British] that you can't erect barriers in our country, that we have a right to protest," said the 43-year-old.
Elsewhere in the capital, on the eve of the anniversary, Argentina's Falkland War veterans observed a midnight vigil at the national memorial to the 649 killed in the 1982 conflict.
Dressed in full combat fatigues and sporting war medals, veteran Ricardo Rojas, said: "April 2, 1982, was a glorious day, on which we finally said enough to British colonialism.
"If we have to return to the islands, we will, just like in 1982. If we go back to war, I will be the first to sign up. If the government thinks military action is needed it has my full support.
"We will never give up our land. These islands belong to Argentina and always will," said the former combatant, who was 20-years-old when Argentina's then ruling military junta conscripted him to fight in the war.
As part of Argentina's Marine Infantry Battalion he fought British troops at Mount Tumbledown.
The veterans ended their midnight vigil with cries of Viva la Patria! and a gun salute.
Meanwhile, Argentina's president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner, led an official act of commemoration in the southern city, Ushuaia .
The choice of Ushuaia was symbolic. It is capital of the Tierra del Fuego province, which Argentines believe the Falklands form a part of, and faces the islands from Argentina's coast.
It was the centre of Argentine military operations in the 1982 war.

US College Shooter Said 'I'll Kill You All'

A gunman killed seven people and wounded three others at a Christian college in California after telling witnesses: "Get in line... I'm going to kill you all."
The sole suspect in the shooting was arrested at a shopping centre about three miles away and was named by police as Huan Goh, 43.
He is believed to be a resident of Oakland, about 10 miles outside San Francisco, and a former student at Oakland's Oikos University , the scene of the shooting.
Police said they were still investigating the motive for the killings. Goh has not been charged. Officers said they believed the attacker had acted alone.
Witnesses described how the shooter, described by police as an Asian man wearing khaki clothing, entered the reception area of the college on Monday morning and opened fire before walking into a classroom and spraying the room with bullets.
Paul Singh, whose 19-year-old sister Devinder Kaur was shot in the arm, said the attacker was an ex-student who had showed up to class for the first time in four months.
"'Get in line and I'm going to kill you all,' is what he said this morning, my sister told me," Mr Singh said. "They thought he was joking at first."
Tashi Wangchuk said his wife, 28-year-old Dechen Yangzom, was in a classroom when she heard gunfire.
"Out of instinct, she locked the door and turned off the lights then the guy came and banged on the door and shot several rounds at the door and then he left," Mr Wangchuk said.
"One of the people who was inside the building, she was saying there is a crazy guy inside," witness Brian Snow told KGO-TV.
"She did say someone got shot in the chest right next to her, before she got taken off in an ambulance."
Local media footage showed terrified students and staff running from the school as armed police surrounded the area and, later, bloodied victims on stretchers being loaded into ambulances.
The school's founder, Pastor Jong Kim, told the Oakland Tribune newspaper that he heard 30 rapid-fire gunshots in the building.
The gunman had been a nursing student, he said, but was no longer enrolled at the college, which has links to the Korean-American Christian community.
The spree killing is the deadliest seen at a US college since a Virginia Tech student shot dead 32 people on the university's campus in 2007 before turning the gun on himself.
It comes a month after a student gunman in Ohio opened fire in a high school cafeteria, killing three students.
